When was it in service?

When was it in service?

I found this thread on the ED forums. The author has gone to the trouble of making a spreadsheet with the service years of all the DCS aircraft... including those that are already available, in development, planned for the future and even some of the wishlist items.

I am not sure how accurate it is, but what I found interesting is that the service dates of the aircraft that we fly were generally later than I though. In fact, some of the aircraft we fly for the Cold War (1947-1991) are actually post-Cold-War.

1967 UH-1H Iroquois "Huey"
1972 MiG-21bis
1973 F-5E Tiger II
1977 A-10A Thunderbolt II
1991 End of the Cold War
1993 AJS-37 Viggen
2003 AV-8B Harrier II
2007 A-10C Thunderbolt II
2005 F/A-18C lot 20 Hornet

With a lot of things I guess it's the specific mark of the aircraft that is post cold-war, the Harrier II for example was introduced in the 80s for the Americans as the AV-8B, and the RAF around 1990 - 91 as the GR.5, where as the specific AV-8B Night Attack with the specific layout and systems we have in game is presumably from 2003.

It's like saying that the RAF flew Mustangs during the battle of Normandy, but they were Mustang IIIs not the Mustang IVs we have in game.

I guess it all depends on how closely you want to look at it, personally for the Harrier I'd say it's passable as an earlier 80s-90s Harrier II or British GR.5 or later depending on weapon loadouts and such, but I wouldn't go so far as to pretend it was a Falklands War era GR.3 or Sea Harrier.

Likewise if they ever get around to making the F-4 Phantom I'll still make a 19 Squadron skin for it even if it isn't the correct variant, and the 1990s era F-14B will still undoubtedly be surrounded by Ray-Bans and 80's film references. 8-)
