SoW server up again

IMPORTANT NOTICES REGARDING SERVER

SoW server up again

Postby Admin (Philstyle) » Sat Dec 29, 2018 11:12 am

Server is up for now again with a new mission added.
I'm also slowly going through all the allied aircraft tail numbers to make them look more historical. Tedious, slow work.

Have started with the spitfires on the "dday plus 5" mission.

Thank you. Nice news.
Yesterday made several sorties in an attack on ships near the coast from Carpiquet.
Looking forward in New Year.
And Merry X-mas for SoW Team and all. Sorry for late...Any way.

Yeah.. thats a problem with the ship damage model... I suggest a post on the ED forums in the WW2 assets section is required...

Yep. We hit a ship with a mix of SC50s and SC500s the other day... to no effect (other than the loss of a FW 190).
Initially I was also sceptical, but I've been doing some research on this and I think I've come to the conclusion it is not so bad.

Given you used the FW 190 and single bomb, I'm guessing you took the SC500. The SC500 has 220kg of explosive (for comparison a U-boat G7a torpedo has 280kg). The problem is that the SC500 does not necessarily breach the hull, although it will certainly cause quite a mess.

Historical evidence

So, I also went looking for ships sunk by FW 190s historically... I only found a few (if you know of others, please let me know!):

  • HNLMS Terschelling (295 t), MMS minesweeper, sunk by unknown number of bombs on 12-Jul-1942
  • SS St. Merriel (4,980 GRT) sunk with two bombs on 02-Jan-1942
  • SS Empire Metal (8,201 GRT) sunk by unknown number of bombs on 02-Jan-1942
  • FFNF CH8 Rennes (137 t) sunk by single bomb on 13-Jul-1942

Please bear in mind the difference between "GRT" (capacity) and "t" (displacement)!!

The largest was the SS Empire Metal (8,201 GRT) sunk on 02-Jan-1943. I could not find the details of its sinking (other than FW 190s were the cause), so I do not know how many bombs were needed to sink it. The SS St.Merriel was sunk with 2 bombs.

Another example of a bombed ship is the RMS Lancastria which required four bombs (although not from FW 190s). I cannot find the bomb size, but I am guessing these to be either SC250 or SC500s.

The ships in the current SoW mission are the USS Samuel Chase (9000 t empty).

Conclusion

Based on this research, I would therefore estimate:

  • USS Samuel Chase (9000 t / ?? GRT) = 2 to 3 x SC 500s.
  • LST ship (4887 t / 1625 GRT) = 1 to 2 x SC 500s.

I agree that the damage model is not the best, but the big ships should not be sinking with a single hit (unless you got them right in the fuel-bunker/ammo-magazine/glockenspiel).

Further testing is clearly needed. I would suggest some controlled experiments against the LST and Samuel Chase ships to get a better idea of the bombing required.

Guys, I don't need to know the historical facts about what happened.
I trust you because I have known you for a long time, and all this time I have been trying to participate in all your projects.
Although it did not always work. But each participation was a Piece of What!!!
Loooking Forward! Whith you!

Thanks for info.

I will try to do it in the usual way. And record the videos.
